To some, summer reading may sound like more of a burden than fun, however the benefits of putting in the effort outweigh the consequences. For those of you that aren't avid book readers, the news of mandatory reading is something of a nightmare. Your summer was supposed to be spent hanging at the beach and snap chatting your friends, NOT doing homework. If you are considering skipping this small requirement for freshman English, here's a few reasons to reconsider...
Written by Leona Range If you have driven past Dobyns Bennett in the past couple months you've probably seen the obnoxious construction site at the front of the school. DB is building a new science and technology center for students! With the expanding numbers of students every year the school needs more space and this is also an educational opportunity to build more labs and classrooms within the school. The new building will be 70,000 square feet and will also hold 400 students. Luckily, for you upcoming students, this eye sore won't be here too much longer! The grounding breaking ceremony for the construction was in December and it is expected to be done in the spring of 2019! But until then you'll just have to get used to the frustrations of the parking lot and the long cold walks.
Written by Kendalyn Peters At this point you probably know that there is not one specific way to study! Everyone learns differently! But did you know that the way you study can cater to your learning style? Here are our tips for each different learning style!
Visual (spatial)- If you learn best using pictures or videos, then we recommend using Quizlet to help you memorize terms and study! Quizlet is an awesome website that allows you to make your own flashcards and review them as many times as you want! There is even a feature that allows you to add pictures to your flashcards, catering to your learning style! Quizlet is great for memorizing foreign language vocabulary, math equations, and science terms! Aural (auditory/musical)- If you learn best using sound and music, then we recommend making a song using the content you are trying to learn! If you have extra time, then try to record yourself on the voice memos app on your phone so that you are able to listen to your song on the way to school, in between classes, or whenever you have extra time! If you don't have extra time and are even crunched on time, then try thinking of short sayings or rhymes that will help you remember the content! Verbal (linguistic)- If you learn best from speaking and writing, then we suggest reading your textbook aloud! While you are reading, try making a list of important ideas and themes you need to know. Try to keep the list short because after you read the textbook, you should rewrite your list several times! Rewriting and reading aloud will help the information sink in much quicker! Logical (mathematical)- Logical learners learn best using reasoning and systems! Even though it is much easier for you all to apply your learning style to math courses, you can use reasoning to study for all courses! We recommend that you create flow charts, note cards, and schedules! Staying organized is key! Social (interpersonal)- If you are an interpersonal social learner, then you work best with other people! Study groups are key! When you work in a study group, you are given the opportunity to debate and discuss the material you are trying to learn with other people! This is helpful when you are unsure why you are missing a problem or when you need further explanation on a process. Solitary (intrapersonal)- If you are an intrapersonal social learner, then you work best alone! We recommend studying in quiet places, such as a library, coffee shop, or even your dining room. All of the above recommendations (Quizlet, flash cards, reading aloud, etc) can be used towards this learning style since they are individual activities! Even though you learn best alone, don't be afraid to ask others for help! Written by Sarah Peters |
